“Arimatsu is where there is a very profoundly mysterious dyed cloth.”
That is what has been said for over 400 hundred years about Arimatsu.
Born on the old Tokaido Road that connected Kyoto and Edo, old Tokyo, Arimatsu became an intersection
for culture, business and people from all walks of life.
Since then, the ensuing centuries nurtured Arimatsu’s resist dyeing
techniques so they now are the world’s most numerous and varied.
The Arimatsu tradition encouraged tying and dyeing to separate into two handicrafts.
This let the two fields develop and innovate while also creating an inherent need to collaborate.
By rediscovering this appeal of the Arimatsu tradition, we let a collaboration of contemporary art,
craft and design to creatively express itself in each cloth we produce.
The indefinable beauty of Arimatsu Shibori-some “iki”,
or aesthetic, is the expression we want to deliver to the world.
This idea is the genesis of our project to herald a new era of Arimatsu Shibori-some
so that each new cloth will prove even more profoundly mysterious.
